For those that only know asbestos as a bad thing and from those infomercials here is a little background on the material...
There are two categories of asbestos: Serpentine and Ampobile of which there are six types.
Chrysotile
Amosite
Crocidolite
Antrhophylite
Tremolite
Actinolite
Asbestos was used in a variety of building materials throughout time because of its great insulation properties and resistance to heat. Asbestos was also added to materials to make them easier to spread and trowel, such as joint compound.
The use of asbestos was curtailed in the late 1970's thanks to several regulations including the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and is not regulated under the EPA and OSHA.
What building owners and prospective purchasers should now is that if your building is pre-1978 you should be concerned about asbestos containing materials and be especially careful during renovation or demolition activities.

People just do not think about this when they are renovating and i think it is a great point. This stuff is horrid.
Shane ~ I agree. Asbestos is an important consideration that needs to be make to ensure safety. I hope that more people take it into account before building renovation projects.
