As a member of this society and still in my 20s I know that my generation will spend a lot of talent, time, and money cleaning up after our parents' generation. This is true in many things, but especially the environment. Just as America is spends vast amounts of time and money cleaning up the waste products of the cold war so my generation is thinking about the waste generated by the production of energy (i.e. nuclear waste and green house gases). It is very likely that my contemporaries or my children will have to find new technologies and social standards to prevent a freshwater crisis that is very likely to be the next big problem. So are the sins of the father the sins of the son? When it comes to our environment it seems that way. Let's remember this over the summer as we scuttle around and many kids are out of school. Get involved with a kid outside and help to make the connection with them that the environment is important. Who knows...they might find the solution to our next BIG environmental problem.
I'm excited to be involved with the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment as a way to get the next generation of environmental leaders engaged in thinking about ways to make our earth a better place. This summer from July 11-16 George Mason University will play host to 150 rising high school seniors from around the country to discuss the major environmental issues facing our nation and world. They will meet with experts, researchers, and practitioners from the Washington, DC area and many high level executives currently working to find solutions in energy, environmental science, policy, law, and activism.

It seems appropriate that my mom would email me the first comment about this post...here it is:
Every generation does good and bad to the earth. We now KNOW what we have done and are doing. This is a relatively new concept, so we have to begin to be more responsible. We older ones must help the younger ones clean up the planet. This idea of a partnership is paramount to top one generation not caring and just leaving it to the next. I want my grandchild to inherit ideas and build solutions because we all care what kind of world he will live in.
